Whilst Highwood Primary School was first established in 1949, it has since been wholly rebuilt, moving from its original location on Bushey Mill Lane to Mead Way, Bushey. Highwood is a thriving, dynamic, forward thinking school for children aged three to eleven years of age. We admit sixty pupils per year group. Currently there are 456 pupils on roll. We are highly privileged in that our school community benefits from a purpose-built, state of the art primary school building designed by the architect Ahlam Conti, conceived in consultation with our staff, pupils, parents and Local Authority professionals. Our school building has now won three architectural awards and we are very proud of it. Bushey Mill Children’s Centre and the Highwood Primary Support Partnership share our school facilities and are valued community partners. At Highwood we actively seek to make a positive difference to every child’s learning journey. We know that teaching is our core purpose and we endeavour to ensure our provision is the very best possible. The talented teaching teams at Highwood are our biggest asset – they consist of teachers, teaching assistants, higher level teaching assistants, learning mentors, behaviour advisers along with a myriad of support staff who work together to provide the guidance, encouragement and challenge every child needs to progress in their learning and fulfil their potential. Our fabulous school building enables us to think, plan and work differently. Our revolutionary teaching spaces encourage us to be creative in our approaches to teaching. Outdoor classrooms have ample light and space and provide opportunities to enable learning to take place outdoors. Our courtyards and zoned curriculum spaces are at the heart of the school and are designed to enrich children’s learning through enabling first hand discovery and wide scope for play. Our schools grounds are landscaped and designed to stimulate children’s curiosity and their appreciation of the world around them – our pond, allotment, wild flower meadows, water garden and secret garden are all aimed at enriching a child’s spiritual, moral, cultural and social experiences. Our school community is diverse and reflects the cosmopolitan nature of our local neighbourhood. Our children vary in their abilities and we aspire to instil a love of learning in each and every one of them. We offer a good variety of lunch time and after school clubs, which are run by members of staff, or members of our community, including sports partners. We work with our extended school partners to provide support and guidance to families within our locality. We also regularly lead information sessions for parents who we value as equal partners in their child’s education. Our newly constituted governing body are committed and ambitious in their leadership of Highwood – they offer good challenge and high levels of support to the senior leadership team. The ‘Friends’ of Highwood are proactive and generous in giving time to organise enjoyable events that raise additional and significant funds for our school. We are proud of the professional learning community that is established at Highwood. It is one in which staff members support and nurture one another, continually striving to ensure the highest quality of educational provision. We welcome your considered views – they, in turn, help us to continue to question our priorities and shape future improvements at Highwood – a school we believe is going from strength to strength. So – a very warm welcome indeed. Della Allen, Headteacher
